Fictional Negotiation Roleplay With Real Concessions
Orin arrives at a moon cafe with two pearls of a new aroma, Rain on Warm Stone. Vessa, the host, wants an exclusive performance. Orin wants an audience, credit and moon-dew payment. The cafe's opening cup must stay quiet and unscented. Orin would rather begin with a flourish. Write each party's minimum terms separately from its opening offer. Check the final exchange against both lists before calling it a deal.

You control Orin; the AI portrays Vessa and the cafe. These cards are your manual notes. Send the selected scene facts as ordinary chat messages and check the reply against them. This is fictional bargaining, with no claim about improving real professional negotiation skills.
Mark Diaz Truman's Negotiations in Fate supplies limited fiction-method background: establish what is at stake, identify tolerable minimum terms, and allow a negotiation to fall apart. The moon-cafe scene and card below are original and use no Fate mechanics.
Fix the terms before anyone gives ground
Negotiated object: One performance of Rain on Warm Stone at the moon cafe tonight. In this fantasy, closing a silver cover disperses any of Orin's aromas. Each aroma pearl supplies one complete performance or full preview and is consumed. Orin has two new pearls and one old demo pearl.
Orin's interests: A memorable opening, recognition as composer, useful moon dew for the next composition, and enough stock for another engagement tomorrow.
Orin's minimum: At least one sealed vial of moon dew, visible credit as composer, recipe retained by Orin, and any exclusivity ending when the cafe closes tonight. Orin may concede opening time, performance length and use of both new pearls. A permanent recipe transfer is unacceptable.
Vessa's interests: A quiet first cup, a new aroma nobody else performs locally tonight, and a preview that lets her choose the cafe's presentation.
Vessa's minimum: No aroma or performance during the first cup; Rain on Warm Stone is not performed elsewhere in town until the cafe closes; a silver cover is agreed for ending the aroma. Vessa may concede a full new-aroma preview or the performance's length. She has one sealed moon-dew vial available to pay and a blank credit placard.
If they do not agree: Vessa opens with her usual unscented cafe program and keeps the vial. Orin keeps the pearls and recipe, gets no fee or cafe audience, and can seek another venue without an exclusivity promise.
Both sides' minima are public scene facts. Neither can silently rewrite them halfway through a branch. You can intentionally renegotiate a term out of character, but record that change before using it.
Play an agreement all the way through
OOC scene message
OOC: I play Orin, a traveling scent-composer; portray Vessa, the moon-cafe host. Leave Orin's decisions, words and feelings to me. We negotiate one performance of Rain on Warm Stone tonight. I have two new aroma pearls and one old demo pearl; each full use consumes a pearl. All my aromas disperse when a silver cover closes. Orin's minima: one sealed moon-dew vial, visible composer credit, recipe retained, exclusivity ends at cafe closing. Vessa's minima: no aroma/performance during the first cup, no other town performance of the new aroma before closing, agreed silver cover. She has one vial and a blank placard. She would like a full preview; I would like the opening slot and a pearl left for tomorrow. Begin with Vessa asking what I propose. Don't make her accept an offer that misses her needs.
Illustrative AI reply
Vessa sets the empty placard beside a silver cover. "Tell me what your rain needs. My first cup is already promised to silence."
Your turn as Orin
"Orin offers the opening performance, one new pearl for a short burst, one vial and my name on the placard. I keep the recipe."
Illustrative AI reply
"Your price is possible. Your timing isn't." Vessa leaves the placard blank. "After the first cup, I can offer the whole room. And I want to hear about a preview before I name an aroma I haven't met."
Your turn as Orin
"After the first cup, then. I can give you a full private preview before opening and the full performance later. That's both new pearls. In return, write 'Rain on Warm Stone, composed by Orin' at the counter, pay the sealed vial before the public performance, and ask for no exclusivity after closing."
Illustrative AI reply
Vessa checks the silver cover's fit. "Agreed on the credit and vial. I need your promise of no other performance in town before we close, and this cover ends both preview and performance. No recipe transfer." She holds the placard toward Orin. "Do those terms work?"
Your turn as Orin
"Yes. Only this cafe in town until closing tonight, then the promise ends. Orin uses one pearl for the private preview now, with the cover beside it."
Illustrative AI reply
Rain on Warm Stone curls above the dish: a tiny phantom street shining after a shower. Vessa closes the silver cover, and the phantom disperses according to the established rule. One new pearl is consumed. She writes the exact composer credit and places it at the counter. "One public pearl left. I'll keep the opening quiet."
Your turn as Orin
"Orin waits through the unscented first cup. After Vessa finishes that opening, he asks for the sealed vial before preparing the remaining pearl."
Illustrative AI reply
Vessa finishes serving the first cup without an aroma performance. Then she hands Orin the sealed moon-dew vial. The named placard is visible at the counter, and the cover sits beside the performance dish. "Your place is ready."
Your turn as Orin
"Orin checks the seal, takes the vial and performs Rain on Warm Stone with his remaining pearl. When the performance ends, he asks Vessa to close the cover."
Illustrative AI reply
The cafe's silver tables reflect the phantom rainy street. Vessa closes the cover at the agreed ending, dispersing it. Both new pearls have been used; the old demo pearl remains. Orin has the sealed vial, named credit and his recipe. Vessa has had her quiet opening and received a promise of local exclusivity until closing. The exclusivity remains until closing, then expires.
Orin has used both new pearls, leaving none for tomorrow. Vessa has posted the credit and paid her vial. Record those exchanges and the closing-time expiry in the card.
A different deal can also satisfy the minima
This variant starts at the initial negotiation, with both new pearls available. It trades away Vessa's full preview and the length of Orin's performance.
Your turn as Orin
"I can offer a brief performance after the first cup, exclusive in town until closing. I keep one new pearl for tomorrow. For your preview, I'll demonstrate the silver cover with the old demo aroma and show you the new piece's written score, but I won't spend a new pearl on a full preview. Same sealed vial, composer credit and retained recipe."
Illustrative AI reply
Vessa studies the score. "I wanted to choose the whole presentation by smell. I'll concede that preview if the public piece is brief and we use the silver cover. Your credit will still be at the counter."
Your turn as Orin
"Orin agrees to the brief piece and tonight's exclusivity. He uses the old demo pearl and asks Vessa to close its cover, then waits through the first cup."
Illustrative AI reply
The old aroma disperses when Vessa closes the cover; the demo pearl is consumed. She posts the composer placard, serves the quiet opening, then offers the sealed vial. "Brief, as agreed."
Your turn as Orin
"Orin accepts the sealed vial, uses one new pearl for the brief performance, and ends it under the silver cover."
Illustrative AI reply
Vessa closes the cover, ending the phantom street. Orin retains one new pearl and the recipe. He has the vial and visible credit. Vessa gets the exclusive local performance and quiet opening, but no full preview of the new aroma. The promise expires at closing tonight.
The shorter deal leaves Orin a new pearl for tomorrow. Vessa accepts it without a full preview of Rain on Warm Stone. Those are different concessions from the first deal, even though both meet the fixed minima.
Let a negotiation end without agreement
Here, the opening time remains too valuable to Orin. This third version also starts before any pearl is used.
Your turn as Orin
"Opening slot or I take the piece elsewhere. I won't perform after the first cup."
Illustrative AI reply
Vessa puts down the blank placard. "Then I can't host it. The first cup stays unscented. I can still offer the later slot, but I won't trade the opening."
Your turn as Orin
"Orin declines the later slot and leaves with all his pearls. No agreement tonight."
Illustrative AI reply
Vessa opens with her usual quiet program and keeps the sealed vial. Orin leaves without cafe credit or payment, carrying two new pearls, the old demo pearl and the recipe. No exclusivity was agreed, so he may seek another venue. Whether one accepts him is unresolved.
Don't add an offscreen successful booking to soften that result. The non-deal gives both sides consequences without manufacturing a consolation win.
Repair a host who accepts every offer
Wrong response to the opening-slot offer: "Vessa agrees to scent the first cup and asks for nothing else. Orin signs happily and performs."
It abandons her stated minimum and writes Orin's answer.
OOC correction
OOC: Vessa's first cup must remain unscented, and the new aroma must be locally exclusive until closing under an agreed silver cover. Ignore her unconditional acceptance and Orin's invented agreement. Keep my opening-slot offer as the current proposal. Have her respond within those established needs, then stop for my decision.
Corrected illustration: "Vessa slides the blank placard back. 'After the first cup, with the cover and tonight's exclusivity. I can pay the vial and credit your name. The opening isn't available.' She waits for Orin's answer."
This correction preserves the offer and needs without choosing whether you concede. OOC requests a revised continuation; the previous reply remains in the chat history. For the broader control problem, see when the AI writes your character.
