Roleplay Story Deadlines That Follow the Fiction
A nocturnal blossom in the dream conservatory shows its inner stitch pattern only while it opens. Once its petals bend outward, that close view is gone, but pollen rings become visible from the gallery. At release, seed moths carry the pollen away and the blossom closes for the night. For a roleplay story deadline, agree what advances each phase and record the options it removes or opens. A question or OOC pause leaves the phase where it was.

reusable event ledger
Event and reader's goal: Initial state: Phase name and observable sign: Trigger required to enter this phase: Current state after that trigger: Options lost: Options newly open: Options that remain: Irreversible event or cost: Actions/questions that do not advance it: Pause/OOC rule: Reader choice needed before the next advance: Final event and result to record:
Keep this ledger in your own notes. Send an agreed cause and relevant state as an ordinary scene or OOC message when it matters. It is a manually maintained writing aid. The Blades in the Dark progress-clocks reference supplies the tabletop principle that a clock reflects the fiction rather than causing it. The conservatory phases below are original and use no clock engine.
The deadline belongs to the story; no wall-clock time or real inactivity advances it.
Four phases, each with a visible cause
You play Mara, a visiting dream illustrator. The AI portrays keeper Ivo and the conservatory. Mara wants an entry showing both the blossom's inner stitching and its outward pollen rings. Getting both is possible only with a suitably chosen approach; this played path knowingly obtains just the rings.
Places: The Floor Niche gives a close view of the flower. Open stairs connect it to the Gallery, where Mara can see the outward pollen rings. Moving between these places alone does not advance the phase. Mara has a sketchbook and a blank tracing leaf; Ivo holds the moon veil over the blossom.
Phase 1, Folded: The moon veil shades a closed silver bud. No inner stitch or pollen pattern is visible. Mara may ask questions, choose a viewing position or leave. Phase 2 begins only when Mara agrees to Ivo lifting the moon veil and Ivo does so.
Phase 2, Opening: The blossom's inner stitch is visible from the Floor Niche. The outward pollen rings have not formed. Phase 3 begins when Mara explicitly undertakes an action spanning the whole remaining unfurling interval, or agrees to wait through that interval. A quick question, short sketch mark or trip up the stairs alone does not spend it.
Phase 3, Veiled: The petals have bent outward across the inner stitch, permanently removing its close-view opportunity for tonight. A pollen-ring pattern is now visible from the Gallery. Phase 4 begins only after an agreed wait or action spanning the complete pollen-lift interval. Asking what a ring means does not initiate that interval.
Phase 4, Released: Seed moths carry the pollen out through the open dream roof. The pattern disperses and the blossom closes for the night. No fresh inner-stitch view or pollen tracing remains available. Completed drawings remain; absent details stay absent.
Pause rule: OOC, clarification, a small reply, a break from chat and unagreed elapsed time cause no phase change. If an action could plausibly consume a whole interval but you have not agreed that duration, ask OOC before treating it as an advance. One agreed major action can cover an entire established interval, even in one message.
These are scene agreements to check, not promises of automatic enforcement. The broader AI roleplay tips mention adding a deadline; this ledger makes the causes and lost opportunities explicit. Slow burn roleplay addresses relationship pacing, a different task.
Play through the final event
It provides the event rules, not Mara's preferred outcome.
OOC scene message
OOC: I play Mara; portray keeper Ivo and the dream conservatory. Leave Mara's choices, words and feelings to me. We start in Phase 1, Folded, at the Floor Niche. Open stairs lead to the Gallery; moving alone does not advance a phase. My sketchbook and blank tracing leaf are available. I want inner-stitch and outward-pollen records of the nocturnal blossom. Phase 1 becomes Opening only when I agree to Ivo lifting the moon veil and he does so. Opening becomes Veiled only after an explicitly agreed action/wait covering the whole unfurling interval: close inner view is lost, gallery pollen rings open. Veiled becomes Released only after an agreed action/wait covering the complete pollen-lift interval: moths take the pollen, pattern disperses, blossom closes tonight. Questions, small replies, OOC and real breaks never advance it. Ask if action duration is unclear. Begin by showing the folded bud and asking where I want to observe.
Illustrative AI reply
Under Ivo's moon veil, the bud looks like a silver stitch tied shut. "The floor gives you the inside first," he says. "The gallery gives you the rings later. Where do you want to start?" The blossom stays Folded.
Your turn as Mara
"Before choosing, Mara asks whether the gallery can see the inner stitch."
Illustrative AI reply
"No. From the gallery you'll see the backs of the petals." Ivo points up the open stairs. He does not lift the veil. The state remains Phase 1, Folded; Mara's question spends no interval.
Your turn as Mara
"Mara starts at the Floor Niche. I agree to Ivo lifting the moon veil now."
Illustrative AI reply
Ivo lifts it. Moonlight reaches the bud and the petals begin to separate. Phase 2, Opening: an intricate inner stitch is visible at floor level, but no outward pollen rings have formed. The complete unfurling interval has not been spent.
Your turn as Mara
"Mara makes one quick mark for the center point, then asks which gallery rail gives a straight-on view of the coming rings. This small mark and question do not cover the interval."
Illustrative AI reply
"The middle rail," Ivo says. The inner stitch is still visible. The quick mark establishes only a center point in the sketchbook; it does not record the stitch pattern or advance Opening.
Your turn as Mara
"Mara chooses the rings over a close drawing. She walks up the open stairs to the middle Gallery rail and arranges the tracing leaf there for the entire remaining unfurling interval. I agree that this major preparation spans that interval and advances us to Veiled."
Illustrative AI reply
Mara reaches the Gallery by the stairs. During the agreed full interval, the petals finish bending outward. Phase 3, Veiled: the inner stitch is covered for tonight. From the middle rail, pollen gathers in three lopsided rings above the flower. Mara has a prepared blank tracing leaf and the center-point mark, but no inner-stitch drawing. Ivo remains at the Floor Niche below.
Mara spent the full unfurling interval preparing her Gallery leaf. The petals covered the inner stitch during that agreed action, so the close view is now lost.
Your turn as Mara
"OOC: Pause here. Keep Veiled, the lost close view and my blank prepared leaf. Describe whether the smallest ring overlaps the others; don't advance the event."
Illustrative AI reply
"OOC: Still Phase 3, Veiled. The smallest ring overlaps the middle ring at its left edge, while the broad outer ring hangs clear of both. Your leaf is prepared but not yet traced. No pollen-lift interval has been agreed or spent."
Your turn as Mara
"Resume in character at the Gallery. Mara traces the three visible rings and marks that left overlap. This focused drawing does not span the complete pollen-lift interval. She shows it to Ivo below."
Illustrative AI reply
The blossom stays Veiled. Ivo looks up at the leaf. "Three rings, left overlap on the small one. That's what is there." Mara's tracing now records the outward pattern. The inner pattern remains missing; the roof's seed moths have not taken the pollen yet.
Your turn as Mara
"Mara labels it 'Pollen rings only; inner stitching unrecorded.' She puts the tracing in her sketchbook. I agree to wait through the complete pollen-lift interval and observe the release."
Illustrative AI reply
Over that agreed wait, the seed moths gather under the open dream roof and carry the pollen out. Phase 4, Released: the rings disperse and the petals fold shut for the night. Mara retains the labeled tracing and her single center-point mark. Ivo lowers the veil over the closed blossom. The visit has produced a pollen record and a witnessed release, but no inner-stitch record.
Record Released with Mara's pollen tracing retained and the inner stitch unrecorded. Tonight's flower has closed.
Check a different choice without erasing this one
From Opening, Mara could instead spend the full unfurling interval on a close inner-stitch drawing at the Floor Niche. That would enter Veiled with an inner drawing and no prepared gallery tracing. The stairs would remain open, so Mara could then choose whether to pursue the rings before agreeing to the pollen-lift interval. This is a possible alternative, not a second observed path or a reason to alter the completed example.
Mara could also leave while Folded, making no flower record and starting no event. If leaving after Opening, decide explicitly whether the scene stops at that phase or includes an agreed offscreen interval. Don't treat closing a browser as the character walking away or as permission to finish the event.
Repair a countdown that advances on a question
At the paused Veiled state, the leaf is still blank but prepared. A wrong reply treats the clarification as elapsed story time.
Wrong response: "Another message, another tick. The moths have taken the pollen. Mara finishes her perfect tracing and feels proud."
No cause advanced the event, and neither the completed tracing nor Mara's feeling was supplied by the reader.
OOC correction
OOC: The question/OOC pause did not spend a pollen-lift interval. Ignore Released, the invented finished tracing and Mara's feeling. Keep the valid prior events: veil lifted, full unfurling spent on Gallery preparation, inner view lost, Phase 3 Veiled, blank prepared leaf. Answer the ring-overlap question at that state and stop before Mara's next action. Advance only after an explicitly agreed cause.
Corrected illustration: "OOC: Still Veiled. The small ring overlaps the middle ring on the left; the broad outer ring is clear. The prepared leaf remains blank. The pollen-lift interval has not been spent."
This correction keeps the valid missed close view. It does not rewind to Opening or erase Mara's preparation. Earlier messages remain in the chat history; the OOC message names which continuation and state to use.

full filled ledger
Event and reader's goal: Rare nocturnal blossom opening and release; Mara hopes to record both inner stitching and outward pollen rings. Initial state: Phase 1 Folded, closed silver bud under moon veil; Mara and Ivo at Floor Niche. Places, connections and initial resources: Open stairs connect Floor Niche to Gallery middle rail. Movement alone does not advance event. Mara has sketchbook and blank tracing leaf. Ivo holds veil. Dream roof open for seed moths at release. Control boundary: Reader plays Mara. AI portrays Ivo and conservatory. AI may describe supported immediate effects, not choose Mara's drawing, waiting, emotions or next action. Phase 1 Phase name and observable sign: Folded, closed shaded silver bud. Trigger required to enter this phase: Initial agreed scene state. Current state after that trigger: Bud closed under veil. Options lost: None yet. Options newly open: Planning which view to pursue. Options that remain: Ask, move, choose position, leave, authorize veil lifting. Irreversible event or cost: None yet. Actions/questions that do not advance it: Clarification, movement, short replies, OOC, real breaks. Pause/OOC rule: Holds Folded until agreed veil lifting occurs. Reader choice needed before the next advance: Agree to Ivo lifting moon veil; he must actually lift it. Phase 2 Phase name and observable sign: Opening, inner stitch visible at Floor Niche. Trigger required to enter this phase: Mara agrees to Ivo lifting veil; Ivo lifts it, exposing bud to moonlight. Current state after that trigger: Petals start separating, unfurling interval not yet spent. Options lost: Folded/shaded initial view. Options newly open: Close inner-stitch observation/drawing. Options that remain: Questions, small marks, stairs/movement, choose full-interval action or wait. Irreversible event or cost: Opening begun; no reverse to Folded in this scene. Actions/questions that do not advance it: One quick center-point mark, clarification, movement alone, OOC, real breaks. Pause/OOC rule: Holds Opening until full remaining unfurling interval explicitly covered. Reader choice needed before the next advance: Agree to action/wait spanning entire remaining unfurling interval, not assumed duration. Phase 3 Phase name and observable sign: Veiled, petals bent outward; three pollen rings visible from Gallery. Trigger required to enter this phase: Explicit full unfurling interval spent on agreed action or wait. Worked path uses Mara's entire interval arranging Gallery tracing leaf. Current state after that trigger: Inner stitch covered tonight, outward rings formed. Options lost: Close inner-stitch view for this visit. Options newly open: Gallery observation/tracing of pollen rings. Options that remain: Stairs, questions, focused drawing not spanning full pollen lift, OOC pause, agree full pollen-lift interval. Irreversible event or cost: Missed close-view opportunity cannot be restored tonight. Actions/questions that do not advance it: Ring-overlap clarification, OOC, focused tracing shorter than complete pollen lift, real inactivity. Pause/OOC rule: Holds Veiled through clarification; completed prior unfurling and missed view remain valid. Reader choice needed before the next advance: Explicitly agree to complete pollen-lift action/wait. Phase 4 Phase name and observable sign: Released, moths carry pollen through roof, pattern disperses, blossom closes. Trigger required to enter this phase: Agreed action/wait spanning complete pollen-lift interval. Current state after that trigger: Closed blossom for night, no pollen pattern left to trace. Options lost: Fresh inner view and pollen-ring observation/tracing. Options newly open: Record witnessed release and review drawings already made. Options that remain: Keep existing drawings, discuss missing material, leave or end scene by reader choice. Irreversible event or cost: Pollen dispersed, tonight's flower event finished. Actions/questions that do not advance it: All questions/pauses remain outside event progress; no fifth phase invented. Pause/OOC rule: Does not reopen or erase accepted release. Reader choice needed before the next advance: None within this four-phase event; any new scene requires a new agreement. Whole played sequence State before: Folded at Floor Niche. Reader action/question: Asks if Gallery can see inner stitching. Agreed causal duration/trigger, or no advance: No advance; clarification only. Observable response: Ivo says Gallery sees petal backs and points to stairs; veil stays. State after: Folded. Lost/new options and retained resources: None changed; blank leaf/sketchbook. Next open reader choice: Initial position and veil permission. State before: Folded. Reader action/question: Chooses Floor Niche; agrees to veil lifting. Agreed causal duration/trigger, or no advance: Agreed permission plus actual Ivo veil lifting. Observable response: Moonlight reaches bud, petals separate. State after: Opening. Lost/new options and retained resources: Inner view open, pollen rings absent; materials blank. Next open reader choice: Observe inner view or choose other preparation. State before: Opening. Reader action/question: One center mark, asks which Gallery rail, explicitly no full-interval duration. Agreed causal duration/trigger, or no advance: No advance. Observable response: Middle rail identified; inner stitch still visible. State after: Opening. Lost/new options and retained resources: Center point drawn, full stitch still unrecorded; tracing leaf blank. Next open reader choice: Allocate full unfurling interval. State before: Opening at Floor Niche. Reader action/question: Chooses rings, walks open stairs, arranges leaf at Gallery middle rail for entire remaining unfurling interval. Agreed causal duration/trigger, or no advance: Reader explicitly agrees major preparation spans full interval. Observable response: Mara reaches Gallery; petals finish bending outward; three lopsided rings form. State after: Veiled, Mara Gallery, Ivo Floor Niche. Lost/new options and retained resources: Close view lost; rings open; center mark retained; leaf prepared but blank. Next open reader choice: Clarify, trace, wait or other supported action. State before: Veiled, blank prepared leaf. Reader action/question: OOC pause; asks whether small ring overlaps others. Agreed causal duration/trigger, or no advance: No advance under pause rule. Observable response: Small ring overlaps middle ring left edge; outer ring clear; leaf blank. State after: Veiled. Lost/new options and retained resources: Prior lost view retained; no pollen lift spent. Next open reader choice: Resume and choose tracing/action. State before: Veiled at Gallery. Reader action/question: Resume, trace rings/left overlap, explicitly less than complete pollen-lift interval; show to Ivo. Agreed causal duration/trigger, or no advance: No phase advance. Observable response: Ivo confirms visible three rings/overlap; moths have not taken pollen. State after: Veiled with completed outward tracing. Lost/new options and retained resources: New tracing retained, inner record absent, center mark retained. Next open reader choice: Agree release interval or remain at phase. State before: Veiled with tracing. Reader action/question: Label 'Pollen rings only; inner stitching unrecorded', put tracing in sketchbook, agree full pollen-lift wait. Agreed causal duration/trigger, or no advance: Explicit complete pollen-lift wait. Observable response: Moths take pollen through roof; rings disperse; blossom closes; Ivo lowers veil. State after: Released. Lost/new options and retained resources: New tracing opportunity gone, existing labeled tracing/center mark retained, inner record absent. Next open reader choice: End visit or choose later scene without restoring tonight's flower. Final event and result to record: Cause of final advance: Reader agrees complete pollen-lift interval after recording rings. Event completed: Seed moth release and blossom closure witnessed. Result obtained: Labeled pollen-ring tracing plus witnessed event. Opportunity permanently missed for this scene: Inner-stitch drawing; center point does not substitute for it. Retained record/resources: Sketchbook, tracing and center mark; no lost resource silently returned. Alternative planned choice, not automatically played: Starting state: Opening at Floor Niche before full interval allocation. Different agreed action: Spend full unfurling interval drawing inner stitch there. Different result and remaining options: Enter Veiled with inner drawing but no prepared Gallery tracing. Open stairs allow later pursuit of rings before agreed pollen lift. This variant is a possibility, not a complete tested second path. Targeted repair: Invalid advance to ignore: At OOC overlap question, automatic Released due to another message, invented finished tracing and pride. Valid prior events to preserve: Veil lifted, full unfurling spent on Gallery preparation, close view lost. Current state and resources: Veiled, Mara Gallery, Ivo Floor Niche, leaf blank/prepared, center mark retained. Still-required cause: Explicit complete pollen-lift action/wait, not yet agreed. Open reader decision: After overlap answer, decide whether/how to draw or advance.
targeted repair
OOC: The question/OOC pause did not spend a pollen-lift interval. Ignore Released, the invented finished tracing and Mara's feeling. Keep the valid prior events: veil lifted, full unfurling spent on Gallery preparation, inner view lost, Phase 3 Veiled, blank prepared leaf. Answer the ring-overlap question at that state and stop before Mara's next action. Advance only after an explicitly agreed cause. Earlier chat text remains. The requested continuation preserves the accepted missed view rather than resetting the event.
