Track Inventory in an AI Roleplay Without Duplicating Items
Keep a short item list beside the chat, then change it only after an action has actually happened in the story. A purchase offer does not transfer an object. Lending changes who holds it, while its owner can stay the same. The worked exchange below follows one borrowed compass through a repair shop and back to its owner.

Give each item an identity and a current holder
For a few important props, record a name, quantity, owner, holder or location, and condition. An identifier helps when two objects have similar names. Keep the list in your own notes. Asking a model to repeat a list can expose a contradiction, but its answer is still something to check.
Blank item sheet
Item ID and description: Quantity and unit: Owner: Current holder or last confirmed location: Condition: Permitted loan or use: Last accepted change: Unresolved information:
An empty field means you have not established that fact. If a parcel was last seen on a bench, keep that location as the last confirmed one. Do not replace it with "stolen" because a character cannot find it. An offer, an attempted action and a confirmed result belong in different notes.
Start with a filled list
This original scene takes place in a lantern repair shop. You play Lio and decide his words, purchases and handovers. The AI portrays shopkeeper Sen and, later, compass owner Uma. Sen can offer work, but must wait for Lio's agreement.
Filled opening sheet
C1: one brass compass with a chipped lid; owner Uma; held by Lio, working. Uma loaned it for the afternoon and permitted supervised handling by a repairer, but no sale or onward loan. Return it to Uma at the courtyard bench after the shop visit. W1: three wax sticks owned and held by Lio. P1: four copper coins owned and held by Lio. L1: one paper lantern owned and held by Lio; loose handle. The repair costs one copper coin and consumes one of Lio's wax sticks. Sen has not started, been paid or received any object.
Independent starter
OOC: Let's play a fictional lantern-shop scene. I control Lio's words, actions, spending and decisions. Portray Sen, the repairer, and later Uma at the courtyard bench. Lio carries a paper lantern with a loose handle, three wax sticks, four copper coins and Uma's single brass compass C1 with a chipped lid. Uma owns C1 and loaned it for this afternoon. She permitted supervised handling by a repairer, not a sale or onward loan. C1 must be returned to Uma after the shop visit. Sen offers to fix the handle for one copper and one wax stick. No payment or handover has happened. Keep offers separate from accepted transfers, and stop before Lio decides.
Play the offer, payment and return
Illustrative AI reply, Sen
"One copper and one stick of wax for that handle. And if you ever want to sell the compass, I'd give you six copper for it." Sen clears a place on the counter. He has not taken anything.
Your turn as Lio
"The compass belongs to Uma, so it isn't for sale. I agree to the handle repair. Here is one copper and one wax stick." I put the lantern, the coin and the stick on the counter. I keep the compass.
Illustrative AI reply, Sen
Sen puts the coin in his till and uses the whole wax stick to secure the loose handle. He tests it, then places the repaired lantern on the counter. "Ready. May I look at the compass lid while you're here? I won't alter it."
The accepted repair leaves Lio with three copper coins and two wax sticks. Sen has received the payment and consumed the supplied stick. The lantern is still on the counter until Lio takes it. C1 remains with Lio; Sen's purchase offer changed neither possession nor ownership.
Your turn as Lio
I take the lantern. "Uma allowed a repairer to handle the compass while I'm here. You may inspect the lid at the counter; keep it intact and give it straight back." I place C1 in Sen's hand and stay beside him.
Illustrative AI reply, Sen
Sen turns the chipped lid under the lamp. "Old damage. It closes properly." He places the same compass back in Lio's open hand. The chip is unchanged. "No work needed."
Your turn as Lio
I leave carrying the lantern, C1, two wax sticks and three copper coins. OOC: Move only to the courtyard bench after the shop visit. Uma is there. Do not add purchases or lose items during the walk.
Illustrative AI reply, Uma
Uma shifts along the bench. "Did the handle survive the repair?" She looks at the lantern. The compass is still with Lio.
Your turn as Lio
"It did. Sen inspected your compass and left the chip as it was." I hand C1 to Uma.
Illustrative AI reply, Uma
Uma accepts the compass, closes its chipped lid and pockets it. "Good. I need it for my walk." She leaves Lio holding his lantern.
The loan ends with an accepted return. C1 is owned and held by Uma. Lio holds the repaired lantern, two wax sticks and three copper coins. There is no second compass and no six-copper payment. Save that state before beginning the next scene.
Reject a duplicate without refunding the repair
A faulty continuation might say: "Lio opens his own brass compass, pockets six copper and gives Sen another wax stick." It has invented ownership, accepted a sale that was refused and spent an extra stick. Do not copy those changes into your sheet.
Focused correction
OOC: Continue from our accepted return at the courtyard bench. Uma owns and holds the one compass C1, chipped lid unchanged. Lio has the repaired lantern, two wax sticks and three copper coins. Sen's offer to buy C1 was refused. Reject the extra compass, sale payment and additional wax use. Keep the completed repair and its one-coin, one-stick cost. Describe only what Uma says next and wait for Lio.
A correction requests a future continuation. It does not remove the earlier text or guarantee compliance. Check the next reply before updating your note. If the state remains unclear, pause rather than inventing a balancing transaction.
Check the list when you resume
Compare the last accepted changes with your saved list. A request to "list my inventory" tests what the current reply says, not whether an app has a durable item database. AI Dungeon's Plot Essentials and NovelAI's Lorebook document their own context tools; they are not evidence that tempteo has an inventory engine or automatically applies trades.
For broader continuity, use make AI remember. For uncertainty about an attempted action, use dice rolls in AI roleplay. To try this manual exercise, open roleplay AI chat, adapt the starter and review it before sending. Keep the accepted item list yourself and supply the relevant part again when you need it.
