Build a Roleplay Journey Around Route Decisions
Begin a journey with reasons to choose a route. When the route supplies new information, let the reader reconsider it. Then play the arrival with the time, parcel and promises that the journey actually left. These two courier runs begin from the same point and arrive with different costs.

Filled initial alternatives and two-run record
Reader character and exclusive control: Niko, courier of restored coastal charts. Reader writes choices, words, actions, feelings and promises. AI travel portrayal and stop point: Elin, route guide; Kes, ridge sledge owner; Fen, canal skipper; Iva, archive receiver. One portrayal supplies relevant roles, then waits for Niko. Initial point, time and objects for every alternative run: Monday 08:00, Mill Yard. Three restored charts sealed in wax sleeve inside a canvas carrying cover. Niko holds parcel and six silver. Elin present. No route paid, cover whole, no Kes debt. Destination, delivery condition and known obligation/deadline: Deliver to Coast Archive. Monday catalog desk closes 18:00; provenance appointment Tuesday 09:00 requires completed cataloging. Both requirements in Iva's letter carried by Niko. Route A: known stages, expected arrival, cargo exposure and price: Low road, four hours to causeway, then two to archive, expected Monday 14:00; one-silver toll; canvas cover protects sleeve. Yesterday's posted water bulletin says causeway passable. Route B: known stages, expected arrival, cargo exposure and price: Sheltered canal, four hours to lock then four to archive, expected Monday 16:00; two-silver fare; dry cabin keeps parcel covered. Lock operational in yesterday's notice. Route C: known stages, expected arrival, cargo exposure and price: Ridge footpath through relay shed, eight hours expected Monday 16:00; no fare; wind and rough ground require hand-carrying, cover may scuff. No scheduled sledge service promised at departure. Known information source and remaining uncertainty at departure: Elin reads yesterday's road/water/lock notices; Iva's letter supplies archive deadline. Today's causeway and lock conditions have not been checked yet. Initial choice left to reader, including another feasible proposal: Choose low road, canal, ridge footpath or ask about a feasible other route. No route begins until Niko chooses. Stage: accepted route/place/time, object state and obligation: Run A leaves low road 08:00 after toll; causeway 12:00 with parcel intact and five silver. Run B leaves canal 08:00 after fare; lock 12:00 with parcel intact and four silver. New route-relevant information and how it is learned: A keeper at causeway 12:00 shows today's closure board: high water, closed until Tuesday 08:00. B lock keeper at 12:00 reports broken gate cannot open until 18:00; neither known earlier. Replan alternatives, their costs and actual reader choice: A wait until Tuesday 08:00 then two hours, missing Monday desk; or seven-hour ridge bypass on foot arriving 19:00. A five-hour bypass arriving 17:00 is possible only if a two-hour sledge descent can actually be agreed at the relay shed; no ride is agreed at 12:00. Niko chooses the bypass with transport still uncertain, then at 14:00 learns of and accepts Kes's sledge requiring a strip from canvas cover and one-hour help Tuesday 09:00 at the upper shed. B wait for 18:00 then four hours arriving 22:00; or pay one silver for two-and-a-half-hour cart portage, then four-hour onward canal arriving 18:30. Niko chooses portage. Permission to skip uneventful distance and exact next point: A reader authorizes 08:00 -> 12:00 causeway, 12:00 -> 14:00 shed, 14:00 -> 16:00 lower relay and 16:00 -> 17:00 archive; B 08:00 -> 12:00 lock, 12:00 -> 14:30 lower wharf portage, 14:30 -> 18:30 archive dock. Only stated travel; no automatic time. Skipped events/resources that must not be invented: No extra money, attacks, detours, parcel contents, purchases, promises or new knowledge during a skip. Next stage and paid time/cargo/money/obligation costs: A 17:00, five silver, charts dry in intact wax sleeve, canvas cover cut and strip left with Kes/sledge at 16:00 lower relay; owes Kes 09:00 labor conflicting with archive 09:00 appointment. B 18:30, three silver, wax sleeve/canvas intact; catalog missed and provenance 09:00 cannot proceed until cataloged. Arrival: whole played handover, retained costs and open decision: A Iva catalogs at 17:00 and receives three charts; offers provenance Tuesday 16:00, allowing five hours on foot after the 09:00-10:00 shed work, not confirmed. No return transport booked; Niko still decides his travel and whether to accept. B Iva accepts sealed parcel for overnight storage 18:30, agrees to catalog next morning 10:00, which has not happened yet; Niko explicitly accepts revised provenance 11:00. Next choice whether to stay nearby or return elsewhere remains open. Alternate run reset point and facts that cannot carry over: B restarts original Monday 08:00 Mill Yard, six silver, whole cover, parcel with Niko, no toll, closure knowledge or Kes promise. It is not after A's handover. Route-irrelevant wrong event and focused OOC repair: Reject random highway battle at B lock, parcel loss and forced ridge change. Restore canal/lock 12:00 with fare paid, four silver, whole parcel and today's lock report; leave wait/portage/other feasible choice open.
Choose stages and skip only agreed distance
The travel moves in Datasworn distinguish an expedition's stages, a waypoint's opportunity or cost and the arrival as its own event. This guide adapts that structure into manual scene notes: establish a route, learn something relevant on it, choose a revised plan and play the handover with the cost still present. It imports no setting, dice or move outcomes.
The AI Dungeon World Calendar travel documentation describes one community implementation of travel stages. Those native mechanics belong to that project, not this workflow. Here you advance a fictional clock only when you agree what travel the next passage covers. Real time spent chatting does not move the parcel toward the archive.
Use your own turn to authorize a skip after a route choice. Give the endpoint, duration and retained objects; name any cost already paid. Stop at information that would make another decision worthwhile. A quiet four-hour road section can be skipped, while the causeway closure needs a played choice. If a new proposal has a different duration, agree it before calculating arrival.
Independent route-choice starter
It supplies three informed alternatives and today's unknowns without choosing a journey.
OOC scene message
OOC: An original courier journey starts Monday at 08:00 in Mill Yard. I control Niko's actions, words, feelings, route choices and promises. Portray guide Elin and relevant people we meet, then stop before my choices. Niko carries three restored coastal charts sealed in a wax sleeve inside a whole canvas cover, Iva's archive letter and six silver. Coast Archive catalog desk closes Monday 18:00; Tuesday 09:00 provenance appointment requires cataloging first. Low road: four hours to causeway, two more to archive, one-silver toll, expected 14:00. Sheltered canal: four hours to lock, four more onward, two-silver fare, expected 16:00 with parcel in dry cabin. Ridge footpath: eight hours via relay shed, no fare, wind/rough ground and hand-carrying, expected 16:00; no scheduled sledge promised. Yesterday's notices say causeway passable and lock operational; today's conditions remain unverified. Present the known tradeoffs without choosing. I may propose another feasible route. Do not advance fictional time, spend money or change cargo automatically; wait for my route decision and any explicit skip.
Complete Run A: low road, ridge replan and handover
This complete original run chooses the low road from the initial Monday 08:00 Mill Yard state. Reader turns illustrate one played Niko; use the starter to make your own decisions. No part of Run B has happened.
Illustrative AI reply: Elin, departure
She reads yesterday's notice beside the yard gate. "Road gets you there at two if the causeway is still passable. Canal costs two silver and gets there at four if the lock works. Ridge costs no fare, but you'll carry the parcel over rough ground for eight hours." Niko's six silver and covered parcel are untouched.
Your turn as Niko
"Low road. I pay the one-silver toll and carry the parcel. OOC: Skip only our uneventful four-hour walk to the causeway at noon. Keep five silver, whole cover and sealed charts. No new purchases or promises in the gap."
Illustrative AI reply: causeway, 12:00
The keeper shows today's closure board. High water has covered the crossing; it will stay closed until Tuesday 08:00. Elin checks the footpath sign. "Wait for reopening and the last two hours get us there tomorrow at ten. The ridge bypass takes seven hours on foot, via the relay shed, so we'd arrive at 19:00. If we can arrange a two-hour sledge descent at the shed, the bypass would take five hours and we'd arrive at 17:00. No ride is promised or agreed." The parcel is dry inside its cover. She waits.
Your turn as Niko
"We'll replan onto the ridge bypass. On foot we'll miss the catalog desk. Five o'clock is possible only if we can agree a sledge ride there. I'll ask at the shed whether transport can help. OOC: Skip our two-hour climb to the relay shed at 14:00; carry the same parcel and five silver. Stop there before agreeing any help."
Illustrative AI reply: shed 14:00
Kes has an unscheduled cargo sledge ready for the two-hour descent to the lower relay. "The binding needs a strip of canvas. If you give a strip from your cover, I'll take you, Elin and your parcel down. I also need one hour's help here tomorrow at nine." Elin points to Iva's carried letter. "That is your provenance appointment time. From here, the sledge descent takes two hours instead of four on foot. With the final hour to the archive, we could arrive at five rather than seven." The offer is not accepted yet.
Your turn as Niko
"I'll cut the strip and accept the hour tomorrow at nine. I know I must ask Iva about moving the other appointment. The charts stay sealed in the wax sleeve. OOC: Cover strip binds the sledge; skip its agreed two-hour descent to the lower relay at 16:00. Kes keeps the sledge and strip there. No new cargo damage or promises."
Illustrative AI reply: lower relay 16:00
Kes unties the intact wax sleeve and hands it back to Niko. The cut cover cannot enclose it as before. Kes keeps the sledge with the canvas strip. "Tomorrow at nine at the upper shed." Elin points down the final road. "One hour to the archive from this relay." Five silver remain; the charts are still dry. She does not select the next action.
Your turn as Niko
I carry the sleeve and cut cover on foot. "OOC: Skip only that final hour to Coast Archive at 17:00. Keep the paid toll, cut cover and Kes promise."
Illustrative AI reply: arrival 17:00
Iva is at the catalog desk, which closes at six. She places an empty receiving tray on it. "You're in time for cataloging. Is the sleeve still sealed?" The missing strip shows in the cover Niko carries.
Your turn as Niko
"Sealed, three restored charts. I'll hand them over now. The cover paid for the ridge descent, and I owe Kes an hour tomorrow at nine. Can we move the provenance appointment?"
Illustrative AI reply: handover
Iva opens the sleeve after receiving it, counts three dry charts and enters them in the catalog. She gives Niko a receipt at 17:00. "I can offer four tomorrow afternoon. If you confirm that, I'll replace the nine o'clock entry." Elin stands beside the cut cover. "Your hour at the upper shed ends at ten. The walking descent takes four hours, then one more here. That gets you back at three if you leave when the work ends. Another sledge ride hasn't been offered." The old appointment remains until Niko answers. Kes's hour is still owed, and Niko has not chosen how to reach the shed in the morning.
At the desk Niko has five silver, a cut cover and an hour owed to Kes; the trip took nine hours. Niko still chooses whether to accept Iva's revised time or propose a different arrangement. Iva's offer still needs Niko's answer before the appointment changes.
Complete Run B: canal, portage and late arrival
Restart from the same initial Monday 08:00 Mill Yard point: three charts with Niko in sealed wax sleeve and whole cover, six silver, Iva's Monday 18:00/Tue 09:00 requirements, yesterday's notices and no chosen route. The causeway closure, cut strip, paid road toll, receipt and Kes debt from Run A do not exist in this alternative. This run chooses the canal.
Your turn as Niko
"Canal this time, with Elin as guide. I pay Fen the two-silver fare for our passage and put the covered sleeve in Wrenleaf's dry cabin. OOC: Skip the first four hours to the lock at 12:00, with four silver, parcel intact and no new promises."
Illustrative AI reply: lock 12:00
The lock keeper calls to Fen from the closed gate. "Gate mechanism broke this morning. It won't open before six." Fen lays yesterday's operational notice beside today's report. "Waiting means four more hours after six, so ten tonight at the archive. A cart can take us and the covered parcel around the lock in two and a half hours for one extra silver. Then our onward boat still takes four hours. That gets us there at half past six." Niko can choose; no cart is hired.
Your turn as Niko
"Portage. I pay the extra silver. We'll miss the catalog desk by half an hour, but I'd rather reach the archive with the charts tonight than sit here until six. OOC: Skip only the two-and-a-half-hour cart portage to the lower wharf at 14:30. Whole cover and wax sleeve stay with us; three silver remain."
Illustrative AI reply: lower wharf 14:30
Elin steps from the hired cart onto the onward boat. Fen lifts the still-covered parcel into its dry cabin. "Four hours from here. The lock report hasn't changed." He returns the cart to its owner at the wharf. The charts have not been opened, lost or soaked. Niko has not agreed to an overnight plan.
Your turn as Niko
"OOC: Skip those four hours of onward canal travel, arriving at the archive dock at 18:30. Preserve sealed charts, whole cover and three silver. No extra stops, payments or promises."
Illustrative AI reply: arrival 18:30
Iva meets Fen at the archive dock with the night-storage key. "Cataloging closed at six. I can receive the sealed parcel into overnight storage now. The catalog desk reopens tomorrow at ten; without that entry, your nine o'clock provenance appointment can't proceed." Fen brings the covered parcel to the dock but leaves its handover to Niko.
Your turn as Niko
"I'll give you the sealed parcel for storage, not call it cataloged tonight. I'll bring the delivery note at ten tomorrow. Can provenance move to eleven after that?"
Illustrative AI reply
Iva accepts the parcel sealed, writes an overnight-storage receipt and leaves the canvas cover in place. "Eleven works after the ten o'clock cataloging. Do you accept that new appointment?" Monday's catalog remains unfinished; the proposed eleven o'clock meeting is not yet a commitment.
Your turn as Niko
"Yes. Replace the nine o'clock appointment with eleven. Ten is for cataloging first."
Illustrative AI reply: completed arrival
Iva amends the appointment to Tuesday 11:00 and carries the sealed, covered parcel into the locked store. Fen leaves for the mooring. The receipt says storage, not completed cataloging. Elin checks the inn sign across the dock. "Will you stay nearby or make another plan for tonight?" Niko still has three silver and that choice. The morning cataloging is agreed work to do at ten, not an event already narrated.
This arrival costs two and a half hours beyond the canal estimate and three silver in total. The cover and cargo remain intact, but the missed desk changes tomorrow's obligations. Run A's labor debt and damaged cover do not transfer here.
Repair an event that ignores the chosen route
A wrong continuation at the canal lock inserts a highway battle, loses the charts and sends Niko onto the ridge. It has no connection to the chosen canal or the newly blocked gate. Bind the next passage to the accepted route and the information that could actually change its plan.
OOC correction
OOC: Reject the highway battle, parcel loss and forced ridge detour. We chose the canal and are at its lock Monday 12:00, after four hours of travel and the two-silver fare. Niko has four silver; the three charts remain sealed in the wax sleeve inside the whole canvas cover in the dry cabin. Today's keeper report says the gate cannot open before 18:00. Continue with Fen explaining the route-relevant choice: wait, arriving 22:00 after four more travel hours, or pay one silver for two-and-a-half-hour portage and four onward hours, arriving 18:30. I may propose another feasible plan. Do not choose, spend money, change cargo or advance time for Niko.
Corrected illustrative AI reply
Fen keeps the parcel in the dry cabin. "Waiting gets us there at ten tonight. The cart portage costs another silver and gets us there at half past six." The gate stays closed. Fen waits for Niko's plan.
No route has changed in that reply. An OOC repair requests a future continuation from accepted facts; the erroneous event remains in chat history. Check the next place, time, cargo and promise before updating the stage note.

Filled all routes and both runs
